The 10th Annual Englewood Jazz Festival will take place On Saturday, September 19, 2009, at Hamilton Park 513 W 72nd. St. from 12:00 (noon) to 6:00 PM, . In case of rain, the festivities will take place inside the field house.
This years headliners are: The Houston Person Quartet featuring legendary Pianist Willie Pickens, Ernie Adams and young Lion Junius Paul Bass. The Maggie Brown Quartet. Creative Supergroup featuring Ari Brown Saxophone/Piano, Dee Alexander Vocals, Ernest Dawkins Saxophones, Junius Paul Bass, Avreeayl Ra percussion. And, Guitto Gargle, presented in part by a Partnership with Punta Giara Cultural Association of Sardinia, Italy.Our grand elder award will be presented to Houston Person. A passionate tenor saxophonist, alternately tough and tender, he is only now beginning to receive the recognition he so richly deserves as today's leading instrumentalist in the tradition Gene Ammons and Stanley Turrentine made so popular during their careers.

De toutes les formations parmi lesquelles se produit la flûtiste Nicole Mitchell, ce trio est peut-être la plus gratifiante. En effet, cette jeune femme, aujourd'hui co-présidente de l'AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) de Chicago, y déploie son art d'improvisatrice dans les meilleures conditions. Cela parce que le trio permet une plus grande liberté et donc un espace de jeu plus conséquent. Mais aussi et surtout parce que Nicole Mitchell y est en compagnie de deux musiciens avec lesquels elle partage une grande affinité. Qu'il s'agisse du contrebassiste Harrisson Bankhead dont l'imagination rythmique et harmonique est une stimulation toujours opportune ou du batteur et percussionniste Hamid Drake avec qui la flûtiste entretient une complicité de longue date.

Membre de l'AACM de Chicago, Dee Alexander s'est illustrée dans des contextes très différents du gospel au rhythm'n'blues en passant par le funk. Ce qui ne saurait pour autant faire oublier que cette jeune femme est avant tout une très grande chanteuse de jazz aussi bien à l'aise dans un registre traditionnel que dans les expérimentations vocales les plus audacieuses. Elle se produit d'ailleurs régulièrement auprès des saxophonistes Ernest Dawkins ou Oliver Lake ou encore au sein du Black Earth Ensemble de la flûtiste Nicole Mitchell. Dee Alexander est toute désignée pour ce projet consacré à ces deux grandes dames du jazz que furent Dinah Washington et Nina Simone. Deux voix comme deux personnalités et deux destins très différents que Dee Alexander évoque avec brio dans le cadre de ce projet bâti autour des arrangements du pianiste Miguel de la Cerna.
